Witch Types of My World

Last updated on October 16, 2020

(Please note that although this has been posted, this is very much a WIP that I’ll be adding to or altering as my characters develop and tell me what the hell it is they do)

Though every Witch has magic, they are not all the same. Some are naturally stronger than others, no one knows how this strength is determined. Genetics can influence Specialities, but not strength. Witches can have more than one Speciality, however one will always be stronger than the other. They tend to be complementary Specialities, such as Elemental (fire) and Creative, Hearth and Nature.

Jacks

The most common type of Witch. Named after the saying ‘Jack of all trades, Master of none’, they can dabble in anything but will never achieve the same level of control as a Specialist Witch. They are also not guaranteed to succeed as easily or as often as a Specialist Witch, but they can perform general everyday magic just fine. Technically all Witches are Jacks to a certain extent outside of their Specialities. Jacks tend to be the best at general annoying curses, the kind that aren’t illegal to use, ie ‘May you step on a Lego’, ‘May Netflix always buffer’, etc.

Knowledge Witches

Your bookworms, academics, researchers, and teachers. They’re almost like a specialised Jack. Knowledge Witches make the best teachers, they’re more flexible in their approach to teaching, and can use their magic to enhance a student’s ability to learn. If a Knowledge Witch owns a business, it’s pretty much guaranteed to be a bookshop. Knowledge Witches tend to be the best at the more complex curses that are banned by law, ie those that cause serious harm or death.

Elemental Witches

Specialising in one or more of the four elements -Earth, Air, Fire, and Water.

Fire specialists tend to work in professions that require wielding hot materials – blacksmiths, glassblowers, etc. Through their affinity to fire they can work magic and their form of Sigils into their pieces.

Air specialists can capture and send whispers on the breeze. They can also send little puffs of air to tickle you if they’re trying to be annoying. They’re also the only ones who can effectively ride broomsticks once their control of their element is advanced enough. There’s no actual reason to ride a broomstick, those that do, do it just because they can.

Water specialists can be sods, especially if you need to pee, they will have water continually trickling in the background, just to annoy you and watch you squirm. Their homes tend to be filled with fountains, located near bodies of water – on the coast, lakes, rivers, etc. Water specialists who take up Knowledge as their second speciality are generally the go-tos when a Mer wants to walk on land. They also have to put up with Water Nymphs, and are called upon for any issues arising from water based creatures such as Kelpies.

Earth specialists are quite grounding, and tend to live in hobbit-like homes if they can. They tend to be advocates of recycling and other eco-friendly initiatives.

Crystal Witches

A subset of Earth Witches, Crystal Witches can enhance the natural properties of crystals and stones. They cultivate the ability to sense and read a person’s energies so as to recommend which crystal would work best for them. They tend to be in high demand for charged clear quartz to aid in boosting the protection Sigils and glamours that protect the villages, towns, and city blocks that house the Otherworld residents.

Nature Witches

A side branch of Earth Witches, they’re the epitome of a green thumb. They can manipulate growing things. They always have luscious gardens. Nature Witches can also coax fruit and vegetables to ripen before their time, though this is a limited thing and depends on the strength of the Witch’s magic as it drains the Witch’s own energy to do so. A Nature Witch’s garden is often home to fairies. They also make quite good apothecaries.

Techno Witches

Generally known as the best hackers the world has ever known. They’re most commonly known to work with computers and the internet, keeping the Otherworld hidden in a world that is making such a job increasingly more difficult. They’re not just internet based, however, they have an affinity for all technology, and tend to be found with all sorts of gadgets.

Hearth Witches

Hearth Witches specialise in the comforts of home. They are the ‘maternal’ figures of the Witching world, they tend to be the most caring when it comes to people, they are comforters and protectors. Hearth Witches are generally protection Sigil experts, they also tend to run cafes, tea shops, coffee shops, bakeries, sweet shops, etc, as they enjoy helping the people that come in. They imbue their goods with Sigils and magic to help those around them.

Creative Witches

Originally an offshoot of Hearth Witches, Creative Witches use their artistic and crafting skills as their magic focus. Sigils spray painted on city walls are by Creative Witches. Toys that come to life and protect their child were made by Creative Witches. Artwork that blankets a home in peace, protection, and happiness was made by a Creative Witch. Magical tattoos are the domain of the Creative Witch, as are magic imbued make-up and glamours.

Spatial Witches

Spatial Witches are ones that defy explanation. No one quite knows how they do what they do, not even the Spatial Witches themselves. They manipulate space, creating Tardis-like buildings, and Mary Poppins-like bags. They tend to work as builders and architects. Working together with Hearth, Creative, and Crystal Witches, they help create the glamours and protection that covers Otherworld villages, towns, and city blocks.

Death Witches

Some spirits stay and become ghosts, Death Witches help these people. Their magic is able to help ghosts become more corporeal, allows them to break free of anything tethering them to a specific space. Death Witches are the most common found in the human world, they work as psychics, mediums, and as guides on ghost tours.

If you don’t set rules, they will go to fancy dress parties as Ghost Busters, generally with a ghost friend tagging along as a prop.

If you like anything I’ve written, and feel like chucking some spare change my way like I’m some sort of street artist with an open guitar case before me, I’d be eternally grateful.
If that’s not your thing, then no worries, just ignore the red button.
